Local MP Steve Ladyman has backed measures announced today by the Ministry of Justice to protect householders from unscrupulous bailiffs.
Stephen Ladyman said:
"A surprising number of people in Thanet and Dover will have to deal with bailiffs at some point in their lives and usually everything is done properly and efficiently.
Unfortunately, now and again, I hear of cases where a bailiff has overstepped the mark. Collecting a debt when you are authorised to do it is perfectly proper but no-one has the right to bully or
intimidate to collect cash you are owed."
"These new measures will mean bailiffs are better trained and better regulated and only licensed agents will be able to enter a person’s property."
The new measures will mean:
More training for bailiffs to stamp out cowboy practices
Set qualifications to raise standards
Put bailiffs under the control of a powerful independent regulator
"People who find themselves in debt and need to deal with a bailiff should understand their rights and need to know they are entitled to be treated fairly and in accordance
with the law. They can read their rights on the DirectGov website or they can call my office or the Citizens Advice Bureau" said Dr.Ladyman.
