Steve (picture above with James Purnell, the Secretary of State for Work & Pensions) has welcomed the replacement of Incapacity Benefit by the new Employment and Support Allowance.
The principle of Employment and Support Allowance is that everyone should have the opportunity to work and that people with an illness or disability should get the support they need to engage in appropriate work, if they are able.
In Great Britain, over 2.6 million people depend on incapacity benefits, and yet nine out of ten new claiments say that they want to return to work.
Steve said -
'It is obvious that people are better off in work – not only financially, but in terms of their health, self-esteem and the future prospects.
People claiming Employment and Support Allowance will be expected to take appropriate steps to help prepare themselves for work, including a series of work-focused interviews with a personal adviser.
Those whose illnesses or disability is too severe to undertake any form of work will get increased financial help'.
