Stephen Ladyman MP and Lord Pendry open the new Sandwich School Artificial Turf Pitch
The new Artificial Turf Pitch at Sandwich Sports Centre has been opened. The opening was carried out by Lord Pendry, President of the Football Foundation and South Thanet MP Stephen Ladyman, who kicked a penalty to signafy the opening.
Headteacher Richard Wallis especially thanked Dr.Ladyman for making the new pitch possible. The Sandwich Sports Centre Trust had campaigned for it to happen over many years and Dr.Ladyman, who is one of the Trustees, played a key role in getting the Football Foundation to agree to providing 60% of the cost. Mr Wallis also described how moved he has been to see the wide range of community use the pitch is getting in addition to school activities.
"Getting the pitch has been a great effort from dozens of people and organisations but I was delighted to play my part" said Stephen at the opening. He paid particular tribute to the previous head teacher of the School, Roy Elliott who had never allowed the Trustees of the Sports Centre to give up on the plans.
