South Thanet MP proudly raised the Olympic flag during the opening ceremony of the new state-of-the-art athletics track at the Marlowe Academy in Ramsgate.
The site provides local Thanet atheletes inspired by Team GB's great success in Beijing an opportunity to hone their skills using top-class facilities, including those for long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot-put, javelin and discus. Steve said;
'The Olympics is a huge opportunity, not just for London but for everyone in the UK. I'm really keen to see as many of our local young people as possible grasp that opportunity and hopefully bring some medals back to East Kent in 2012. I also want to see our local Councils grasping the opportunities the Government is making available to them so that they can improve our local sports facilities as well.
And even if you are a bit old to aim for a medal or just want to train for fun then getting a bit of the Olympic spirit and becoming involved with a sport will help you get fit, keep trim and live longer.'
The track has been paid for by Thanet Council, Kent County Council, Sport England through the National Sports Foundation, the Big Lottery Fund, The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust and the East Kent Partnership.
